60s and 70s Technology / Part One
Gotta love the old rotary dial phones that came in gorgeous bright colors! They came in a variety of sytles and colors to accent any sort of desire!
Typerwriters! They are still popular even to this day. Heck, I even have one! They changed how news was spread and gave every individual the chance to write. It made secretaries have an easier time writing; it gave newspapers a faster print time.

60s Television
Many good television shows came out in the sixties: Batman, I Dream of Jeanie, Bewitched, Original Star Trek, Adam-12, and, the best for last, Doctor Who. Many of these had a huge impact on the counterculture. Even to this day, those actors emerged from simple television shows to become great actors that implanted themselves onto brains of the world. Here, let me give you a snapshot back into the 60s...
Farrah Fawcet
Playing in shows such as The Flying Nun, I Dream of Jeanie, The Six Million Doller Man, and Charlie's Angels, she jumped from show to show happily. She was only on C'sA for a season before leaving, getting her sued by the producers of the show. She ended up coming back for six episodes.
Dick York
He is one of my favourite actors even in the 21st century. His father Bernard was a salesman. His mother worked as a seamstress and later operated a beauty shop. The family moved from Indiana to Chicago when he was ten.
Almost everyone's favourite Bond, Sean Connery was in seven differnet James Bond movies: Diamonds are Forever, Dr. No, From Russia with Love, Goldfinger, Never Say Never Again, Thunderball, and You Only Live Twice. He's actually knighted, so that makes him automatically epic.
Vivien Leigh
America's darling Scarlet O'Hara, Vivien Leigh was in numerous movies besides Gone with the Wind, such as A Streetcar Named Desire, Ship of Fools, Anna Karenina, Caeser and Cleopatra, and The Extraordinary Seaman. Vivien Leigh and Lawrence Olivier met and fell in love while filming Fire Over England in 1937. They were both married at the time, and continued their affair until their respective spouses granted them divorces. Leigh and Olivier were married in 1940. Katharine Hepburn was one of only two witnesses. She was also bipolar.
Mickey Rooney
In numerous movies, this beloved gentleman of theatre was one of those few greats with acting careers spanning over half a century. We all still mourn his beautiful soul passing from this world. His comic relief was huge in his Andy Hardy movies from his early acting career.
60s Fashion
Alright, guys, lots of fashion photos coming your way. Just a bit of the 60s Memorable Monday. Fashion was huge in the 60s. It helped push the counterculture forward with the outrageous trends that parents still don't approve of today: Crop tops, jump suits, those really short dresses, not to even mention poodle skirts.... Those are still the worse fashion decision ever to have been invented. Anyway, many fashions were made to push the limits of cultured society, to the point of breaking into the counterculture.

Counterculture slang
Counterculture Slang
Slang list
This is such a gas, y'all. I wish it could be aced, but I tried my best. All my generation is all show and no go, the shallow friggin barbie dolls. They're all around the bend, ya know? Thank god for the few that actually have the brains and use them to the point where common sense is barely alive with them. Should have the good 5% of common sense/street sense folk be put into office. Bail everyone out. Get real, ya'll. Enough with my beef on how shallow and obsessed my generation is with their phones. Just havin' a blast writin' this. Would do a friggin Chinese fire drill, while I'm at all this fun, but this dove's got no reason to get all hyped up on this new thing. Far out, dude. Join us flower children and kick with some friggin flower power, dudes. I'm friggin hip, dude. Got nothing but friggin' jack but school. It's far out, dude. I wonder if the friggin mop top will ever come back... Be peaceniks, dudes.
Alright, enough of that. I can't take how out there that slang of 60s is. Can't believe how baaaaaad it is to the ear! I think I broke my mind trying to speak in their slang.

The Summer of Love
The articles focus on the Summer of 1967, affectionately dubbed 'The Summer of Love'. While there was violence at some points, it succeeded at multiple points. The author's point is to bring attention to the actions of the Summer of Love. The major symbol is the use of love. That summer was mainly the love of love, drug use, freedom, non-conformity, and peace. The author's tone is reminiscent of the old 60s freedom.
This summer was critical to the evolution of the counterculture. It brought attention to the once-small group of citizens that fought in their own way against Vietnam and war. It promotes the use of drugs and free sexuality, but it also brought peace to the forefront of many minds. It brought about the social change we now see today in our music and art.
Learning to Fly by Pink Floyd
Learning to Fly
by
Pink Floyd
Into the distance, a ribbon of black
Stretched to the point of no turning back
A flight of fancy on a windswept field
Standing alone my senses reeled
Fatal attraction is holding me fast,
How can I escape this irresistible grasp?
Stretched to the point of no turning back
A flight of fancy on a windswept field
Standing alone my senses reeled
Fatal attraction is holding me fast,
How can I escape this irresistible grasp?
Can't keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted Just an earth-bound misfit, I
Tongue-tied and twisted Just an earth-bound misfit, I
Ice is forming on the tips of my wings
Unheeded warnings, I thought I thought of everything
No navigator to find my way home
Unladened, empty and turned to stone
Unheeded warnings, I thought I thought of everything
No navigator to find my way home
Unladened, empty and turned to stone
The soul intention is learning to fly
Condition grounded but determined to try
God keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I
Condition grounded but determined to try
God keep my eyes from the circling skies
Tongue-tied and twisted just an earth-bound misfit, I

Above the planet on a wing and a prayer,
My grubby halo, a vapour trail in the empty air,
Across the clouds I see my shadow fly
Out of the corner of my watering eye
To dream unthreatened by the morning light
Could blow this soul right through the roof of the night

The main idea of this song is that the counterculture is slowly taking off. The main symbolism is the act of flying and the learning to do so. The act of flying is the taking off of the counterculture. The learning to fly is the struggle of the counterculture's fight to be recognized. The authors use dream-like metaphors to describe the feeling of the overall counterculture's struggles. The authors use the tone of a machine-like power to explain how fast the counterculture is growing in strength.
This shows how the counterculture struggled to gain traction until it gained favor with the American population. It then goes on to show how far the counterculture has come to power through music and other art forms. It shows how the counterculture makes a societal change through music and art forms.
The Acid Queen by The Who
by
The Who
If your child ain't all he should be now
This girl will put him right.
I'll show him what he could be now
Just give me one night.
I'm the Gypsy - the acid Queen.
Pay before we start.
I'm the Gypsy - The acid queen.
I'll tear your soul apart.
Give us a room and close the door
Leave us for a while.
Your boy won't be a boy no more
Young, but not a child.
I'm the Gypsy - the acid queen.
Pay before we start.
I'm the Gypsy the acid queen.
I'll tear your soul apart.
Gather your wits and hold on fast,
Your mind must learn to roam.
Just as the Gypsy Queen must do
You're gonna hit the road.
My work is done now look at him
He's never been more alive.
His head it shakes his fingers clutch.
Watch his body writhe
I'm the Gypsy - the acid queen.
Pay before we start.
I'm the Gypsy - I'm guaranteed.
To break your little heart.
This girl will put him right.
I'll show him what he could be now
Just give me one night.
I'm the Gypsy - the acid Queen.
Pay before we start.
I'm the Gypsy - The acid queen.
I'll tear your soul apart.

The songwriters are trying to show how dangerous drugs are in this song. They show a boy taken to a gypsy to be healed. The major symbol is acid, being the drug LSD. It's a symbol that drugs aren't good for anything. It uses repetition of I'm the Gypsy and the Acid Queen to show how drugs make you not so sane. The author's tone is creepy and insane.
This is a huuuuuuuuge representation of the drug use of the 60s. There was lots of floaters, hippies, and communes in the 60s. Most people in the 60s counterculture was alright with drug use. Anything they could use to "be happy" and "see stars", they would use. It makes the comment that drug use is not good for anyone, while everyone is using it for a temporary high. It shows how insane people will become when something is needed and nothing else works.
Vietnam War
These photos show the hardships of the soldiers in Vietnam. The author's main purpose was to show how traumatic the war was for both sides, and how much damage was left behind. The main symbols are the soldiers. Numbers 107 (Peace helmet), 77 (Caution: being a marine...), and 16 (War is Hell) show how much the evolution of peace came through to the press. They know they are going into a dangerous situation, but they might not know what they are fighting for. The author sounds proud of our soldiers for fighting in this war.
This piece is a good representation of the counterculture because it shows how fast the American population came to hate the war. It shows the war in full brute force, while also showing the counterculture's influence on politics and society. It's critical of the politics of the time, but it also shows how effective the counterculture of hippies and free-wheelers was in progressing change in America at the time.

Kent University Shooting
This event was huge in the eyes of the counterculture movement. So much music and art came from this that it was unbelievable. It is possible that, without this event, the counterculture would not be the same as it turned out to be almost fifty years later.
The main idea of this work is to inform on the actions that led up to and occurred during the Kent State shooting. The author's purpose was to inform the public all of these years later on how much is still unknown. The author uses very good language that paints a picture in your mind. The language is so vivid you could picture it in your head as if you were there that day.
Ever Hitler
Ever Hitler
by
Jane Teresa Tassi
There cantilevered on a bough of time
a man who simmers murder stares the air.
A blau and bruise and brown, resembling wine
compose the breath of night, shake down a hair
of stars, then tail-yank evening from its lair.
He sits rippleless; uliginous he thrills
to gaze at, brainstopt all the gory hills
a man who simmers murder stares the air.
A blau and bruise and brown, resembling wine
compose the breath of night, shake down a hair
of stars, then tail-yank evening from its lair.
He sits rippleless; uliginous he thrills
to gaze at, brainstopt all the gory hills
of interlocking dead: couples, kid, a girl,
that moment in a gentle, thriving dream
stopped blank as jolts of blood would cause a curl
to seep around a knife's quick tip and gleam
then cull a sleeping infant from his mien--
This done, the years contrive to seem to change.
Yet Goths, Pol Pot, Nero, a cave, a plain.
that moment in a gentle, thriving dream
stopped blank as jolts of blood would cause a curl
to seep around a knife's quick tip and gleam
then cull a sleeping infant from his mien--
This done, the years contrive to seem to change.
Yet Goths, Pol Pot, Nero, a cave, a plain.
The main idea of this poem is that war is hell. This man's tired, bruised, stuck in a war. He seems to see everyone who is dead: couples, a kid, and a girl. He's brain dead with everything he has seen. He comments that the sleeping infant culls from his mien of innocence when blood curls around a knife tip. The author uses strong language to convey how much sorrow there is in war. It's commenting on how hard and mentally rough war can be. He sits in a swampland, and he doesn't move. It describes how this slice of time is just a sliver on a projecting structure, but time keeps moving without stopping for this single pause.
This is a good representative for the counterculture movement. It would show that the sixties are just a sliver of time in the past of humanity. It shows that not everyone agreed with the Vietnam War. With the line "then cull a sleeping infant from his mien --", it shows how the soldiers were considered baby-killers by some of the American population.
Ashes
by
Betty Hayes Albright
Betty Hayes Albright
I finished it off last night, my love,
with the embers I had kept
when you blew out your half of our love,
I finished it off and I wept.
With ashes you had left behind
I fanned a spark that remained
and when it was lit, burnt my half of our love
and watched it like someone deranged.
I watched the thick smoke disappear
and knew I could never pretend.
These ashes could never be otherwise
so I scattered them into the wind.

The main idea of this piece is that the ashes of love are gone when a person leaves the relationship when the fire is still burning. The ashes are the symbol of a love that has died, while the fire is a symbol of a love that is desperate to hang on to what was once there. The author uses repetition of fire-related words to show how it has affected the person in this poem. The author is mourning the loss of this person's love while also acknowledging that the ashes will never change back into that once-had fire.
This is a good representation of the movement of the counterculture of the sixties because it shows how free love was given as a teenager (or person) yet so easily pulled away for someone else. It shows the free sexuality of the sixties, and how some felt when that love was pulled away with a breath. It's commenting on how sad the pulling away of love is, and the effect it has on the person it's being yanked away from. It shows how hurt someone can be, but it also shows how someone can eventually let go of those ashes. This can also have to do with the general relationships in the sixties. People tended to be more sensitive and open in friendships, and other relationships. This poem explains how it feels when any type of relationship falls to pieces.
