Vietnam War

These photos show the hardships of the soldiers in Vietnam. The author's main purpose was to show how traumatic the war was for both sides, and how much damage was left behind. The main symbols are the soldiers. Numbers 107 (Peace helmet), 77 (Caution: being a marine...), and 16 (War is Hell) show how much the evolution of peace came through to the press. They know they are going into a dangerous situation, but they might not know what they are fighting for. The author sounds proud of our soldiers for fighting in this war.

This piece is a good representation of the counterculture because it shows how fast the American population came to hate the war. It shows the war in full brute force, while also showing the counterculture's influence on politics and society. It's critical of the politics of the time, but it also shows how effective the counterculture of hippies and free-wheelers was in progressing change in America at the time.
